Block be gone

Since many of you lovely bloggers are doing NaNo, I thought it timely to write a post about the dreaded block.

writers-block

What to do when it hits you:

Shake things up a little.  Get out of your usual writing place. Go to a park, a cafe, the zoo, your Aunt Betty’s,  anywhere at all, just get out. You need a change of scenery.

Listen to conversations. Start to write them down and then let your mind take over. Take it where it needs to go.

Eat. No, not those chips. Put them down.  You need fruits and veg.  Say it after me…”Fruit and veg is a brains best friend.”  You’re bowel doesn’t mind them either.  :)

Let the kids, significant other, dog make dinner.  They can survive for a night or two without you.  Shut yourself off and have dinner delivered on a tray. When you’re a bestseller they will know burning down the house was well worth it.

Make a sound track for your novel.  Download some mood music that suits the theme and make it into its own little playlist.  This works, trust me.

Worship at the foot of your cork-board.  Or whiteboard, or wall,  what ever you use to plan things out. The answer is in there somewhere, it simply needs some teasing to find it.

Go for a walk. Put your headphones in, with your playlist on of course, and get some air into your imagination.

Kill a character off. Don’t worry, you can resurrect them later on.  By mixing things up, you jump-start new ideas.

Interview your characters.  Have a helpful friend or relative ask the questions and you answer them.

Play it out like a movie. Have a conversations with your characters,  ( we already think your nuts,  it can’t get worse by speaking out loud,) and make them talk to each other.

Write crap.  Start with any old thing and keep writing. It will sort itself out if you keep tapping away.

Writing at the same time very day is a well-known tip, but it can also become a block.  Wake up early if you write at night. Move things around like night and day and see what it does for you.

I hope you are all tapping away at the keys successfully and remember any amount of words is more than I’ve done this month :)   Now stop reading blogs and go write.
